There are numerous orthopedic conditions that range from mild to severe. Depending on the severity of the condition, some of them require surgery whereas some get treated by non-surgical methods. Here, we will be talking about one of the orthopedic conditions that affect the elbow. It is known as cubital tunnel syndrome. For international standard quality orthopedic devices, find experienced orthopedic device manufacturers.

You might be aware of carpal tunnel syndrome and this cubital tunnel syndrome is similar to that only just it affects the elbow, unlike carpal tunnel. Let us dive deep into the topic.

What is Cubital Tunnel Syndrome?

Also known as ulnar neuropathy, it is a condition characterized by increased pressure on the ulnar nerve. As a result, pain, tingling, and muscle weakness occur in the forearm and/or hand. This nerve passes closely to the skin around the elbow and that area is known as the funny bone.

What Are the Causes of Cubital Tunnel Syndrome?

Cubital tunnel syndrome can occur due to multiple causes and some are listed below:

Pressure

On the arm or putting it under pressure too often is one of the common causes of ulnar neuropathy. This could occur in those with desk jobs as they put their arm on the armrest for long periods.

Overuse

Repeated bending and straightening of the elbow can also put the ulnar nerve under stress and as a result, cubital tunnel syndrome can occur. Athletes are more prone to the syndrome with such a cause.

Underlying conditions

People who have arthritis, bone spurs, and previous fractures or dislocations are also at risk of developing the condition.

Anatomy

In some people, the ulnar nerve is unstable, and hence, it keeps moving back and forth. This repeated snapping can irritate the nerve and it gets compressed.

Sometimes, no cause of the condition is identified.

What Are the Symptoms of Cubital Tunnel Syndrome?

Cubital tunnel syndrome causes pain around the funny bone and along with this, loss of sensation, tingling, weakness in arms or hands, and loss of grip may be experienced. These symptoms are often felt when the affected elbow is bent for a long time.

How Cubital Tunnel Syndrome is Diagnosed?

The diagnosis will start with a physical examination where the healthcare service provider will assess the range of motion of the joint along with painful areas. Besides this, the medical history will also be closely examined to identify the cause of the symptoms. To confirm the condition, certain diagnostic tests are also required and they may include:

  • Nerve conduction test
  • Electromyogram (EMG)
  • X-ray

What is the Treatment of Cubital Tunnel Syndrome?

The treatment of the condition depends on its severity. The first and foremost thing the healthcare service provider advises is to rest and stop the activities that worsen ups the symptoms. A splint or foam elbow brace may be applied at night to reduce irritation. An elbow pad may be used to prevent chronic irritation caused by hard surfaces. Anti-inflammatory medicines are also prescribed to relieve inflammation whereas, nerve gliding exercises can strengthen the muscles around the elbow. When none of this work, surgery may be recommended.
